Winston Churchill Competition

This picture was my participation for a competition created by Arts Thread in cooperation with The Winston Churchill Foundation and Pentland Inc. The wanted outcome was a 2D artwork of any medium celebrating the life and personality of Winston Churchill. I chose to submit a photograph shot and edited by myself.
In the picture, we notice a very narrow path filled with fog. This claustrophobia created by the lack of space and the fog symbolizes the prison in which Churchill was held in after the train accident and his escape. The model in the image seems to reach out for the top, the light, consequently freedom. This freedom is enhanced by the depth of the image and the light at the end of the path. Moreover, from Churchill’s life we know that he spent his 25th birthday in this prison and thus, I decided to hide this information through the marks on the wall that sum up the number 25. Lastly, the choice of a female model could be seen as Winston Churchill’s mother. While growing up, Churchill frequently sought after some affection from her by sending her numerous letters asking for a reply, which he rarely got, since she never had time for him. By choosing to replace him with his mother I wanted to symbolize this connection and need he had to probably prove himself to a mother that never cared for him and his achievements.
